(And a Look at the Heart of Portimão’s Old Town)
Tucked away on Rua da Hortinha, just off Rua do Comércio (Rua das Lojas), you’ll find a part of Portimão that still feels authentic — where family-run shops, historic buildings, and creative entrepreneurs keep the city’s spirit alive.
At Mar Interiors, we’re proud to be one of the many small businesses that make up this charming network of independent shops — from home décor and fashion to jewellery, art, and local produce. But in recent years, like many others here, we’ve faced a growing challenge: keeping afloat in a city centre that’s changing fast.
💭 Why Supporting Local Matters
When you buy from a small local shop, you’re not just making a purchase — you’re helping someone’s dream survive. Every sale supports local families, helps pay fair wages to artisans, and keeps money circulating within our community.
Local shops also give a town its character. They’re what make a stroll through Portimão’s streets feel warm and personal — not generic. When you walk into a small boutique or design studio, you’re greeted by people who love what they do, and who genuinely care about their customers.

🚗 The Realities of Running a Business in the Old Town
One of the biggest challenges we face today is parking. Many locals love the city centre but avoid it because they fear getting fines or not finding a spot. It’s understandable — parking can be tricky! However, what many residents don’t know is that Portimonenses actually get one hour of free parking with Portipark. It’s a small detail that can make a big difference — and we encourage everyone to take advantage of it and come explore what’s here.
There’s also a misconception that the old town only offers “expensive tat” — but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Alongside long-standing classics, there’s a wonderful mix of shops selling quality home décor, handmade gifts, jewellery, clothing (including high-end brands like Tous), Bedding and linen, and local food and produce.

✨ Community Efforts and Hope for the Future
The local business community has come together through a new association, working hand-in-hand with the Câmara Municipal de Portimão to revitalise the area. One of the highlights of this collaboration has been the creation of “Quintas ao Luar” — a summer event launched two years ago to bring life and energy to the streets on warm Algarve evenings.
With music, street performances, and food & drink stalls, the event invites people to enjoy the city centre from 18:00 to 23:00, giving shops the chance to stay open later and welcome visitors under the moonlight. While the first year saw weekly events in August, this year the format expanded — one Thursday each month from June to September — to reach more people over a longer period.
For many of us, including Mar Interiors, sales on those evenings haven’t skyrocketed, but we’ve gained visibility, connection, and renewed attention to the centre — which is a big step in the right direction.
There’s a growing sense of momentum, with beautiful old buildings being restored and new businesses opening — proof that the heart of Portimão is still beating strong.

💚 A Personal Note from Mar Interiors
At Mar Interiors, we believe in timeless design, craftsmanship, and community. Every product in our shop — from handwoven palm baskets to Decorative cushions and items — tells a story of care and creativity. And every customer who walks through our door helps us continue that story.
So next time you’re nearby, take that free hour of parking, wander down Rua da Hortinha, and rediscover Portimão’s old town.
You might be surprised by what you find — and you’ll be helping to keep our beautiful city alive.
