ABOUT MAR INTERIORS
Design is personal.
So is the designer behind it.

MY STORY
I'm Ângela, the designer behind Mar Interiors.
Portuguese by nationality but born in Barcelona, I moved to London with my mother when I was three, where I grew up and spent most of my life. Living between different cultures has shaped the way I see the world and, inevitably, the way I approach design.
My interest in interiors started early. I was the child constantly rearranging my bedroom, experimenting with different colours and finding far too much satisfaction in building flat-pack furniture. I knew from a surprisingly young age that I wanted to become an interior designer.
I went on to study Interior Design at the University of the Arts London, where I developed the technical and creative foundations of my practice. Since graduating, I've continued to learn through experience - working in the industry, working with clients and, perhaps most importantly, simply paying attention to the world around me.

COLOUR & MATERIALS
WHAT INSPIRES ME
Colour has always been an important part of my work.
During my time as a professional colour consultant at Farrow & Ball on King's Road in Chelsea, I developed a much deeper understanding of how colour behaves - how light, architecture, materials and surrounding colours can completely change the way a colour is perceived.
That experience taught me to look beyond simply choosing colours I like, and instead to understand why a particular colour works in a particular space.
I'm often asked which interior designers inspire me, and I always find the question surprisingly difficult to answer.
Rather than following one particular designer or aesthetic, I'm inspired by the world around me - nature, architecture, colour, shape and form.
I'm fascinated by the way materials interact with one another, the way light changes a colour throughout the day and the contrast between old and new.
Fashion is another constant source of inspiration. I like to keep an eye on what is happening in fashion and interiors, although I'm equally interested in knowing when a trend simply isn't right for a particular space.
MY STYLE

Calm, with character.
My style doesn't fit neatly into one particular category - and that's intentional.
I love colour, interesting shapes and unexpected details, but I believe a space should ultimately feel calm and considered. I'm drawn to interiors where there is enough simplicity and breathing room for the things that make a room special to really stand out.
I'm particularly inspired by traditional architecture and decoration, especially Victorian interiors, and I love bringing a little whimsy into a space where it feels right.
In more contemporary interiors, I often introduce natural materials such as stone, wood and glass to bring warmth, texture and a sense of permanence.
For me, good design is about finding the balance between beauty and calm, character and simplicity, old and new.

MY PHILOSOPHY
Design should feel like you.
I don't believe in designing homes to fit a particular formula. Good interior design should make everyday life work better, but it should also make you feel something.
For me, the best interiors balance beauty with practicality, old with new, colour with calm, and structure with personality.
My job is to bring the technical knowledge, creative direction and experience - while making sure the finished space still feels unmistakably yours.
